In a revealing interview with Hélio Carneiro's program on Rádio Sabiá FM, this Friday, December 6, 2024, chemical engineer and researcher at Unicamp, Oscar Fernando Herreira Adarme, presented the ambitious Arrakis Bioenergia project, which seeks to transform sisal, known as the "sugar cane of the backlands", into an engine of sustainable development for the semi-arid Northeast. Arrakis Bioenergia, created in 2024 in Camaçari, Bahia, is a spin-off from Unicamp and is already a reference in innovative solutions for bioenergy in semi-arid regions.

Technology and Sustainability in the Backlands

The project led by Arrakis Bioenergia aims to install a biorefinery in Conceição do Coité, Bahia , to fully process the sisal leaf. Unlike the traditional model, which uses individual machines to extract only the fiber, leaving 96% of the leaf as waste, the new centralized system will allow the plant to be fully utilized. In addition to high-quality fiber, the biorefinery will produce biogas, animal feed and biochar , a type of carbon-rich charcoal that improves soil fertility and contributes to carbon capture, essential for environmental sustainability.

Inspired by successful initiatives with agave, such as those developed by Arrakis Bioenergia in partnership with Senai Cimatec and Shell, the project combines science, entrepreneurship and social commitment to revolutionize the sisal production chain.

Economic and Social Impact

Arrakis Bioenergia's main proposal is to transform sisal into a sustainable economic asset, providing new sources of income and social development for the semi-arid region. The initiative involves purchasing sisal leaves directly from producers , at fair prices and with decent working conditions, in addition to offering training programs. One of the first approved courses will train 400 local workers , promoting the qualification of the workforce.

Furthermore, the use of water in the process will be completely sustainable. The water used to wash the fiber will be recycled and reused to produce biogas, which can be used as cooking gas, fuel for machines and to generate energy. This approach makes the biorefinery a model of circular economy, combining environmental preservation and economic viability.

Potential for Global Biofuels

With the support of authorities such as ministers, the governor of Bahia and mayors from the region, the Arrakis Bioenergia project promises to transform the semi-arid northeast into a global hub for the production of biofuels.

Hélio Carneiro, the program's presenter, highlighted the potential of sisal, stating that it could play the same role that sugar cane plays in other regions of Brazil.

Arrakis Bioenergy and the Future of the Semiarid Region

The leadership of the project by Arrakis Bioenergia, which was born from research initiatives by Unicamp in partnership with major institutions, reinforces the integration between science and practice. The success of technologies developed for agave in the context of biomass and bioenergy is being replicated for sisal, bringing innovation and sustainability to the backlands.

A New Perspective for Sisal

Oscar Adarme’s interview not only detailed the technical ambition of the Arrakis Bioenergia project, but also brought hope to thousands of farmers and workers in the region. More than a biorefinery, the proposal symbolizes a new future for the Northeastern backlands, where sisal will become the engine of a sustainable, socially just and environmentally responsible economy. The semiarid region will no longer be seen as a place of limitations, but as an epicenter of innovation and resilience in Brazil.
